Poems in English

When the heart swung open wide

When the heart swung open wide,
It burned with a searing fire—
Though I thought autumn had come.

When the heart swung open wide,
A wind blew, bitter with blood,
A wind blew with desert dust.

When the heart swung open wide,
It flung the door with a gust—
It jammed; impossible to close.

Since then—there’s no more hope,
Just salty and bitter sand,
Scorching and sharp and dry.

There is only the sky so clear
In your incredible eyes—
There’s midnight and stars, the stars:

Their shimmer, a gentle light,
Sweet soothing medicine—
The burns almost don’t hurt…
